Supreme Court questions law on Chief Election Commissioner selection
The Supreme Court of India has questioned a 2023 law concerning the selection process for the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners. The law grants a 2:1 advantage to the government in the selection committee, which includes the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and a Union Cabinet Minister. The Centre argued before the court that it would be incorrect to assume the Prime Minister would act in bad faith during the selection process.
