DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Accelerates, Death Toll Exceeds 1,700
The Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has become the fastest-growing on record, with over 1,700 deaths reported. Cases have surpassed 3,800, and the World Health Organization chief has stated the outbreak is outpacing response efforts. The WHO head visited Congo to support the response, warning of the need to urgently scale up efforts as new cases double in some areas. Neighboring countries are increasing preparedness, while reports indicate pregnant women are avoiding hospitals due to fear of Ebola, leading to increased maternal deaths.
