Government Considers UPI Charges on Business Payments Above Rs 2,000

Reports indicate the Indian government may introduce charges on UPI payments exceeding Rs 2,000 made to businesses. A Bill introduced in Parliament allows the government to notify transaction types that could attract such fees. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor stated that UPI infrastructure costs must be borne by someone, suggesting consumers might already be indirectly paying. Official estimates suggest a Rs 2,000 threshold would affect about 5% of UPI transactions by volume, but 65% of total value, impacting purchases like groceries and taxi fares.
