Road accident fatalities on national highways show mixed trends

Data from January-April 2026 indicates a 9.4% rise in road accident deaths on national highways compared to the previous year, according to police statistics. However, separate data for the full year 2025 shows a 4% drop in fatalities on national highways, marking the first decline since the Covid pandemic. This 2025 decrease occurred despite an overall 5.3% rise in accidents across India during the same period. The government has also reported building 25,917 km of national highways across 1,191 projects at a cost of Rs 7.15 lakh crore.
