Hiroshima marks 81st atomic bomb anniversary with calls for nuclear disarmament

Hiroshima marked the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing on Thursday, August 6. Approximately 50,000 people gathered in the Peace Memorial Park. The event commemorated the US dropping of a uranium bomb, which killed an estimated 140,000 people by the end of 1945. The mayor of Hiroshima deplored the pursuit of nuclear weapons. A Japanese official stated a realistic approach toward a world free of nuclear weapons is needed within the UN treaty framework. Survivors and activists warned against Japan's rearmament, fearing it could erode pacifism.
