Iranian footballers granted Australian citizenship after protest
Seven Iranian female footballers were granted Australian citizenship after refusing to sing Iran's national anthem during a match in Australia. The players, Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh among them, sought humanitarian visas while in Australia for the Asian Cup. While five players later returned to Iran, the remaining two chose to become Australian citizens. They expressed pride in their decision, which was a protest against the Iranian regime.
