Centre Opposes Income-Based Quota Filter for SC/ST Reservations in Supreme Court
The Union government has opposed pleas in the Supreme Court seeking an income-based 'creamy layer' exclusion for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) reservations. The government argued that judicial precedent dictates the creamy layer concept does not apply to SCs and STs. It also stated that most welfare schemes, excluding education and State services quotas, already incorporate a means test to ensure benefits reach the intended recipients. The Centre contended that reservation is not solely based on economic status.
