A Syrian court has sentenced former president Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia. He was convicted of crimes against humanity related to the country's civil war. The verdict was issued by a court in Syria. Some reports also state his brother was sentenced to death. The former president reportedly fled to Russia in 2024.
