Rajya Sabha erupts over 'purification' ceremony after Kharge's rally
A controversy erupted in India's Rajya Sabha following a 'purification' ceremony conducted by Hindu organizations at the Ramlila Maidan in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, where Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had held a rally. Kharge, who is Dalit, stated in the Rajya Sabha that the ceremony made him feel the "sting of untouchability" and that it was an insult to him and all Scheduled Castes. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President J.P. Nadda expressed regret over the incident and assured that an investigation would be conducted. Some centrist outlets focused on the political uproar and Nadda's assurance of an investigation, while left-leaning outlets highlighted Kharge's personal anguish and accusation of anti-Dalit sentiment.
