CAG Report Highlights Railway Hygiene Failures, Irregular Levies
A report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has revealed significant hygiene issues within the Indian Railways, including the presence of E. coli in drinking water at stations and a lack of basic amenities in 89% of facilities. The CAG also flagged that the Railways irregularly collected ₹168 crore by levying a 'superfast surcharge' on slow trains. In response, the Ministry of Railways has ordered corrective measures, including upgrading water systems at 20,000 locations and ensuring safe drinking water.
