Supreme Court, BCI clash over NALSAR students' rights
The Supreme Court has intervened in a dispute between the Bar Council of India (BCI) and NALSAR University, barring the BCI from taking coercive action against NALSAR students, faculty, or administration. A plea by NALSAR alumni stated that BCI letters created a chilling effect on freedom of speech. The Chief Justice of India (CJI) criticized the BCI's interference, questioning its authority to restrict students who protested his invitation to the convocation. The BCI Chairperson, Manan Kumar Mishra, has since apologized to law students for his remarks, stating that blanket restrictions on NALSAR law graduates' enrollment were inappropriate. The BCI has also decided to allow NALSAR's 2026 law graduates to enroll in any State Bar Council.
