Food Safety Crackdowns and New Regulations Across India
Food safety authorities across several Indian states have conducted inspections and taken action against establishments for hygiene and quality violations. In Karnataka, over 400 kg of meat was seized in two weeks from various establishments, including government canteens and hotels, as part of an FDA crackdown. Bengaluru inspections uncovered rotten and expired food items, including 276 kg of spoiled vegetables and expired dairy products. In Nashik, the FDA suspended the licenses of three hotels for food safety and hygiene breaches. Telangana has launched a new unified regulatory framework, TG-SAFE, merging food and drug safety functions to improve oversight. Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court ordered the FDA to pay Rs 5 lakh to a sweet shop after its license was repeatedly suspended despite compliance.
