Supreme Court Upholds Hanging, Allows Review of Alternative Execution Methods
The Supreme Court has dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to abolish hanging as the method for executing the death penalty. The court stated that hanging would remain the method of execution. However, it permitted the Union government to explore alternative methods, such as lethal injection, shooting, or electrocution, to reduce pain. The court suggested that new scientific evidence could prompt future reconsideration of the execution method. The PIL had sought the replacement of hanging with less painful alternatives.
