Supreme Court seeks Centre's response on plea to halt online disclosure of accused identities
The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Central government and state governments in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL). The PIL seeks to restrain police from revealing the identities of accused persons online, including on social media. The court has asked the Centre to file its reply regarding the matter. The petition specifically requested directions for states to remove posts from police social media handles that disclose the faces or identities of accused individuals or depict them in a dehumanizing manner.
