Maduro claims immunity in US drug trafficking case
Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has asked a US judge to dismiss drug trafficking charges against him, asserting sovereign immunity. His legal team filed papers in Manhattan federal court arguing that as a foreign leader, he is immune from prosecution. Maduro has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is awaiting trial, which is scheduled for June 1, 2027, if his immunity claim is unsuccessful. One report alleged that Maduro was abducted by US forces during a military attack on Caracas in January.
