Controversy Erupts Over India's Q1 GDP Figures
India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures for the first quarter have become a subject of controversy, with former finance secretary Subhash Chandra Garg questioning the data's authenticity. Garg suggested an investigation into whether the reported GDP growth is genuine, citing a perceived discrepancy where the GDP value reportedly fell from ₹86 lakh crore to ₹80 lakh crore. Responding to these concerns, Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), stated that the GDP revision is being "misread" and defended the methodology used. Union Minister Piyush Goyal also commented on the matter, referring to critics of the 7.8% GDP growth as "naysayers."
