Kenya President orders Tata Chemicals to halt operations, shares dip
Kenyan President William Ruto ordered Tata Chemicals to cease operations at its Lake Magadi soda‑ash plant, saying the firm had not provided sufficient local benefits. Ruto claimed the company was exporting raw soda ash instead of processing it locally for glass and chemicals. Tata Chemicals said its Magadi unit complies with Kenyan regulations and is awaiting a ministry review. Following the announcement, Tata Chemicals’ shares fell between 2.5% and 2.7% in early trading. The company noted it acquired the Lake Magadi operations in 2005 through the purchase of Brunner Mond Ltd, inheriting a concession dating back to 1911.
