Sikkim identifies 40 high-hazard glacial lakes, 16 at extreme risk
The Sikkim government has identified 40 glacial lakes as high-hazard, with 16 of them classified as being at the highest risk of outburst floods. Shako Chho is identified as the most vulnerable lake. The state is enhancing satellite monitoring, early-warning systems, and implementing measures to lower lake levels. These actions follow a deadly glacial lake outburst flood in 2023. The identified lakes are categorized: 16 in Category A (highest risk), 2 in Category B (high risk), and 9 in Category C (moderate to low risk).
