Flash Floods and Landslides in Nepal Leave Thousands Missing
Flash floods and mudslides along the Trishuli River in Nepal's Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts have caused widespread destruction, with one report stating 4,216 people remain missing. The disaster was triggered by one of the largest landslides recorded in the Himalayas in recent years, causing the Trishuli River to swell up to six times its normal size and swallow houses. Rescue teams are currently searching for workers trapped in tunnels of the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project. Due to the number of unrecognizable bodies, authorities are using DNA identification. The disaster occurred ahead of the September-to-November Hindu festival season, impacting merchants and traders, and is estimated to cost insurers over $130 million before death and injury claims are processed.
