Flash floods in Nepal kill over 1,300 and leave thousands missing
Flash floods triggered by heavy monsoon rains on August 26 swept large parts of Nepal, destroying roads, bridges and homes. The death toll reported by Indian media outlets rose to 1,344, while authorities said the number of missing persons exceeded 4,000, including 275 Indians still unaccounted for. Relief efforts involved Indian volunteers, a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescue team, NGOs and international agencies delivering food, shelter and medical aid to temporary camps. Over 2.2 million tonnes of debris were reported, and survivors in camps faced shortages of clean water, sanitation facilities and basic items such as women's sanitary pads. WhatsApp was widely used by rescuers to locate and coordinate assistance for survivors. The phrase “Lau Suna Suna” went viral on social media, with media explaining its meaning as “nothing heard”. Conditions in overcrowded camps remained difficult, with limited privacy and hygiene.
