IIT Study Warns of Flood Risk from Expanding Glacial Lakes in Himachal
Researchers from IIT Mandi have identified nine glacial lakes in Himachal Pradesh that are rapidly expanding, posing a significant flood risk. A study found these lakes are growing due to rising temperatures accelerating glacier melt in the Himalayas. The expansion of these lakes, described as potential 'water bombs', could threaten downstream communities. The Statesman reported separately on 16 glacial lakes in Sikkim also raising flood alarms.
