US States Use Recycled Materials in Road Construction
In Michigan, over 7,000 scrap tires were repurposed for paving Ellsworth Road in Pittsfield Township, with researchers evaluating the performance of this rubber-modified asphalt. Separately, in 2019, Michigan incorporated more than 10,400 pounds of recycled packaging plastic into asphalt for road and parking lot construction across multiple projects. In 2022, Hawaii utilized recycled plastic equivalent to 195,000 bottles for road construction. These initiatives are part of broader efforts to manage waste, as globally, only about 9 percent of plastic produced since 1950 has been recycled.
