NHAI challenges Supreme Court order on stray animal shelters
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) filed a petition asking the Supreme Court to modify a November 2025 order issued by a bench led by Justice Vikram Nath in suo motu proceedings over stray dog attacks. The order directed NHAI to remove stray animals from highways and to build shelters for stray cattle nationwide, with an estimated cost of about ₹7,000 crore. The Supreme Court agreed to set up a special bench to hear NHAI's plea against the cattle‑shelter directive.
