Supreme Court Hears Challenge to Vande Mataram Singing Mandate
The Supreme Court is examining a challenge to the mandate of singing all six stanzas of the national song, Vande Mataram. Musician T.M. Krishna has petitioned the court, arguing against the requirement. The court has sought a response from the Union government. During a hearing, former judge S. Muralidhar noted Solicitor General Tushar Mehta's remark referring to "Naxalites" in relation to the case, which Mehta defended. The controversy involves the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act and the Centre's directions. One report states that later stanzas of Vande Mataram contain references to Hindu deities.
