Super El Niño may cause 450,000 deaths, 15,800 in India, researchers say
Researchers from the Climate Impact Lab at the University of Chicago estimate that the current 'Super' El Niño could lead to about 450,000 excess deaths worldwide, with the highest mortality expected in poorer nations that are already dealing with food insecurity, high energy costs, climate change and the fallout of the war in Iran. The same study projects that India could experience roughly 15,800 additional deaths over the next six months, a share that may occur during the winter season and extend into the summer. Some reports also note that the El Niño is likely to worsen drought conditions in Asia and push food prices higher.
