IIT Bombay student's death sparks protests, probe into alleged harassment
Following the death of Sahil Wakode at IIT Bombay, protests erupted on campus. The student's father has alleged caste-based harassment by a professor and the administration. Students participating in the protests clarified their stand, stating the demonstrations were aimed at reform and demanding a fair probe, not to justify cheating. The Crime Branch is investigating the case and has been scanning CCTV footage from the exam hall to the hostel. In a related development, faculty at IITs have backed a professor who was removed as dean amid the row over the student's suicide. Official data indicates that 45 student suicides have been reported across 23 Indian Institutes of Technology between 2020-21 and 2024-25.
