Woman faces Indian tax demand after paying US taxes

An Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) ruling addressed a case where a woman, having paid taxes in the US, faced a tax demand in India. Under India's Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) rules, taxpayers who have paid taxes abroad must submit Form 67 with their Income Tax Return (ITR) to claim credit for foreign taxes paid. In this instance, the woman reportedly did not file her ITR, leading to an income tax addition of Rs 16 lakh. Another report mentioned a tax demand of Rs 30 lakh.
