Navanethem Pillay Awarded 2026 Nobel Peace Prize
Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, a South Africa-born judge on the International Court of Justice and former UN human rights chief, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized her for her work "ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted" and for her efforts to promote peace and international law. Pillay, who is of Tamil origin, has previously headed the Rwanda genocide tribunal and accused Israel of genocide in Gaza. The Nobel Committee admitted they had not yet reached Pillay to inform her of the award. The prize was announced on Friday in Oslo, Norway.
