A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake, the strongest to hit Panama in 75 years, struck the country, causing damage to homes and the collapse of a cathedral. At least 27 people were reported injured. Tsunami warnings were issued following the tremor. Canal operations in Panama remained normal.
