NPCI Defers UPI Merchant Fee on Transactions Above Rs 2000
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has deferred the implementation of Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charges on UPI transactions exceeding Rs 2000. The levy, initially set to begin on October 15, 2026, will now be imposed after Diwali. This decision follows concerns raised by businesses and political questions. While the charge has been postponed, it has not been withdrawn. Ajay Srivastava has stated that charging MDR on UPI could increase costs and benefit companies like Visa and Mastercard.
