Solicitor General disputes Hindu law's basis in Manusmriti
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated that Hindu law is not based on the Manusmriti. He clarified that the dominant Mitakshara school of Hindu law, prevalent across most of India since before 700 AD, derives its principles from the Yajnavalkya Smriti and grants inheritance rights by birth. The Dayabhaga school, found in Bengal and Assam, is also mentioned as a separate tradition.
