EU Fines AliExpress Record Sum for Illegal and Counterfeit Goods
The European Union has imposed a record fine of €550 million (approximately $629 million) on the online retail platform AliExpress. The penalty, levied under the EU's Digital Services Act, is for allowing the sale of illegal and counterfeit products, including unsafe toys and counterfeit clothing, on its site. AliExpress, owned by Alibaba, was notified of the investigation in March 2024 and has stated its intention to fight the decision. This action marks a significant enforcement of the Digital Services Act against major online marketplaces.
