Justice Bhuyan comments on dissent and biryani arrests
Supreme Court Justice Ujjal Bhuyan stated that the democratic space in India is shrinking due to curbs on dissent. Speaking at the 4th Justice G.P. Singh Memorial Lecture in Bhopal, he questioned the arrest of students for protesting and the denial of bail in cases like the Ganga boat trip biryani incident. Justice Bhuyan clarified that consuming chicken biryani over the Ganga River is not an offense under any law. He emphasized that dissent is the essence of democracy and that students are sometimes jailed merely for protesting.
