Centre rejects Metro rail for Coimbatore, Madurai; suggests BRTS
The Union government has again rejected proposals for Metro rail systems in Coimbatore and Madurai. The Ministry stated that a Metro rail would not offer significant time savings for commuters in these cities. Instead, the Centre recommended strengthening the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) for both urban areas. This decision marks the second time the proposals have been turned down, with population criteria cited as a factor.
