Powerful earthquake strikes Japan, causing mall collapse and casualties

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck southern Japan's Kyushu island, triggering a tsunami advisory and causing a shopping mall to collapse. Rescue operations were underway at the collapsed Aeon shopping mall in Kumamoto, where bodies were recovered from the rubble. The earthquake was followed by a suspected gas blast at the mall. Officials reported that the death toll had risen to at least 28, with survivors struggling in the heat amidst numerous aftershocks.
