Hiker Impaled by Pole Walks Miles for Surgery
An American hiker, David Cifaldi, was impaled by his own trekking pole while hiking on Montana's Granite Peak. Instead of calling for a helicopter rescue, Cifaldi walked approximately 10 to 16 kilometers (6 to 10 miles) to safety. Surgeons later removed the pole and treated him.
