Indian states consider adding eggs, chicken to school meals

Multiple Indian states are considering changes to their mid-day meal schemes for school students. In West Bengal, the government announced that eggs will be part of the menu from August 1, to be served alongside meals provided by ISKCON. Separately, the Tamil Nadu government is reportedly considering a proposal to introduce chicken biryani weekly under its noon meal scheme, with the School Education Minister stating this on July 29, 2026. These discussions follow a debate regarding diet imposition and the inclusion of non-vegetarian items.
