A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Japan's southern island of Kyushu, near Kumamoto, on July 28. The earthquake caused widespread damage, including collapsed buildings, fires, and a factory smokestack collapse. As of the reports, 34 people have died, with many injured and others still missing. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with thousands evacuated and survivors facing difficult conditions. A tsunami advisory was issued and subsequently lifted.
