Supreme Court Questions CEC Appointment Law, Centre Defends PM's Role
The Supreme Court questioned the exclusion of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from the committee that selects Chief Election Commissioners (CECs) and Election Commissioners (ECs). The government, represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, defended the 2023 law, arguing that the Prime Minister's office has sanctity and that the court should not presume bad faith. The court, however, raised concerns about the "show of fairness" in a process where the government holds a 2:1 advantage in the selection panel, which is chaired by the Prime Minister.
